A Future in the Mainland?
I just got back from my awesome vacation from Seattle visiting friends and running a great and amazing marathon in the olympic penninsula. Taking this week vacation away from home couldn't have come at a better time for me. After a long and stressful school year and dealing with family and my relationship it feels so good to get away from the ordinary and explore different lands once in a while. While in Seattle, I stayed with my boyfriend's friends at their house in Edmonds (just 15mins outside of the city). The couple me and my boyfriend stayed with (Dale and Kristyn Bonilla) showed us such a great time around the seattle area and made my vacation extra special and exciting. They have such a beautiful town house, 3 daschounds (who they refer to as their children), and both work well paying jobs at Boeing. During my stay I kind of wondered what it would be like to have what they have- my own home, a well paying job, pets to take care of and call my children, a nice homely neighborhood not far from the city but still with a lot of resources around the area. Kristyn asked me where I would move to after I graduate from school. I said i wouldn't mind moving to San Fran, Portland, or Seattle, but not immediately. Thinking realistically about my future, I know its important to lay a foundation for my career in hawaii before going abroad. It would be harder to get my degree, fresh outta college, and up and move to a whole new state cold turkey (not to mention its expensive). But moving back to the mainland wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Talking it over with my boyfriend, I think he's willing to move to whichever city I happen to find work in. In the end, the mainland has more options. It would mean starting a whole new chapter in my life, which after college I intend to do. And the mainland is economically more stable than hawaii is. Looking at the bigger picture, the only way most people survive in hawaii is to live with family in one house because shit costs so much money and jobs don't pay well. At least in the mainland you get paid well for your hardwork and if you budget your expenses well enough, buying a home, and living resourcfully isn't hard to do over there. I think thats what makes the mainland more appealing to me right now.
